Retirement Planning in Manalapan
A retirement plan holds up because of small decisions made carefully: which account pays the bills first, the year you claim Social Security, how a pension is elected. We work through each one with you so your income lasts as long as you need it to.

What retirement planning covers with us
Saving for retirement and living in retirement are different problems. While you work, the job is to add to accounts. Once the paychecks stop, the job is to turn a 401(k), an IRA, a pension and Social Security into steady monthly income without paying more tax than you have to or running short in your late eighties.
Most of what decides whether a plan lasts is unglamorous. The order of withdrawals, the timing of a Roth conversion, a survivor option on a pension, a beneficiary form nobody has looked at since it was first signed. We spend our time on those details because they compound, quietly, over twenty or thirty years.
We meet clients at our office in Manalapan or by phone and video, and we work with people throughout the surrounding area, including Marlboro, Freehold and Old Bridge.
What goes into your retirement plan
A written income map
We lay out where each month's income will come from, year by year, from your last paycheck through your nineties. You see the gaps before they arrive.
Social Security timing
We compare claiming ages for you and, if you are married, for your spouse. A survivor benefit often matters more than the first check, so we look at both.
Withdrawal order and taxes
Taxable accounts, tax-deferred accounts and Roth accounts are taxed differently. We set an order for drawing on them and flag years when a partial Roth conversion may make sense, with an eye on New Jersey's treatment of retirement income as well as federal brackets.
Required minimum distributions
We plan ahead for RMDs so they do not push you into a higher bracket or raise Medicare premiums unexpectedly.
Portfolio alignment
Your investments are matched to when you will need the money. As Series 7, Series 66 and SIE licensed professionals, we can carry the plan through to the accounts themselves, and our Investment Management page explains how that works.
Beneficiary and pension review
We check every beneficiary designation and walk through pension election choices before you sign anything that cannot be undone.

Signs it is time to plan your retirement income
- You are within ten years of retiring
- This is when choices about savings rates, Roth contributions and Social Security start to carry real weight. Earlier is easier.
- You cannot say what you will live on
- If you know your balances but not your monthly income in retirement, the plan is not finished yet.
- Your accounts are scattered
- Old 401(k)s from past employers, an IRA at one firm, a spouse's plan at another. Pieces that never get looked at together tend to drift.
- A pension decision is on the table
- Lump sum or annuity, single life or joint and survivor. These elections are usually permanent, so they deserve a careful look first.
- You have already retired
- It is not too late. Withdrawal order, RMDs and conversions can still be adjusted, and many retirees benefit from a fresh review.
How we build the plan with you
- 1
Introductory meeting
We talk about when you want to retire, what you want that time to look like and what worries you most. You learn how we work and whether we are a good fit.
- 2
Gathering the details
We collect statements, pension estimates, your Social Security record and recent tax returns. Nothing is assumed when it can be confirmed.
- 3
Drafting and testing
We build your income map and test it against weaker markets, higher inflation and a longer life than average. We show you where the plan bends and where it holds.
- 4
Review together
We go through the plan line by line, in plain language, and adjust it until it reflects your priorities. Then we put the pieces into place and revisit them as tax rules, markets and your life change.
What shapes the cost of retirement planning
The fee depends on how much there is to work through, not on a fixed package. We explain how we charge during the introductory meeting, before any work begins, so the cost is clear from the start.
- Number of accounts and sources
- A single 401(k) and Social Security is simpler than several IRAs, a pension, rental income and a deferred compensation plan.
- Single or married
- Planning for two people means two claiming strategies, survivor scenarios and more pension choices.
- Tax complexity
- Roth conversion analysis, business income or large taxable accounts take more modeling. Our Tax Management service can go deeper where needed.
- Ongoing management
- A one-time plan costs differently than a plan we monitor and adjust with you each year alongside your portfolio.
Retirement planning questions
- How much do I need to retire?
- There is no single number. It depends on what you will spend, what Social Security and any pension will cover and how long the money needs to last. We work from your actual spending and income sources rather than a rule of thumb.
- When should I claim Social Security?
- It depends on your health, your other income and, if you are married, your spouse's benefit. Waiting raises the monthly check, but it is not right for everyone. We run the numbers for your situation and show you the tradeoffs.
- Can you help if I am already retired?
- Yes. Many of the details we work on, like withdrawal order, RMD planning and Roth conversions, apply after retirement too. A review often finds room to reduce taxes or smooth income.
- Do you also manage the investments?
- We can. We hold Series 7, Series 66 and SIE licenses, which lets us carry the plan through to the portfolio itself. Some clients prefer a plan only, and that is fine too.
- How does this connect to passing money on to family?
- Retirement accounts pass by beneficiary form, not by will, so we review those designations as part of the plan. For broader goals, our Legacy Planning service picks up from there.
