Legacy Planning in Manalapan

A will states your wishes, but beneficiary forms, account titles and timing decide what actually happens. We work through those details with you, line by line, so your wealth reaches your family and the causes you care about the way you intend.

What legacy planning covers

Legacy planning is the financial side of passing on what you have built. We look at every account, policy and asset you own, then check how each one is set to transfer. A retirement account follows its beneficiary form, not your will. A jointly titled brokerage account may pass outright to the surviving owner. Small settings like these often matter more than the large documents.

Drafting wills and trusts is legal work, and it stays with your estate attorney. Our part is the account-level picture that attorneys and accountants rarely see in full. We share it with them so the documents they prepare and the accounts you hold lead to the same result.

It is the right time to start when your family changes, when you retire or sell a business, or when you realize you are not sure who is named on an older account.

What the work includes

A full beneficiary audit

We gather the current primary and contingent beneficiaries on every IRA, 401(k), annuity and life insurance policy. Outdated names, missing contingents and accounts left to an estate are flagged in writing.

Account titling review

We check how brokerage and bank accounts are registered, including joint ownership and transfer-on-death designations, and note where the title works against your plan.

Inherited account planning

Most non-spouse heirs now have ten years to empty an inherited IRA. We map out how that rule affects each person you plan to name and whether some assets suit them better than others.

Gifting and charitable strategy

We help you decide what to give during your lifetime and what to leave later, including options such as qualified charitable distributions once you reach the eligible age.

Coordination with your attorney

With your permission, we share a summary with your estate attorney so trust funding and account designations match the documents they prepare.

A written legacy summary

You leave with a plain record of what you own, where it goes and who to contact, something your family can actually use.

Signs your legacy plan needs attention

  • A form you have not looked at in years

If you opened a retirement account at a former employer and never revisited it, the named beneficiary may be a former spouse or someone who has since passed away.

  • A marriage, divorce or new grandchild

Family changes rarely update account paperwork automatically. Each one is a reason to review every designation you have.

  • A trust that was never funded

Many people sign a trust and stop there. If accounts are not retitled or the trust is not named where it should be, the trust may hold very little.

  • Heirs outside the immediate family

New Jersey's inheritance tax can apply to transfers to siblings, nieces, nephews and friends. If you plan to leave assets to them, the structure deserves a closer look.

  • No one knows where things are

If your spouse or children could not list your accounts tomorrow, the plan is not finished, even if the documents are.

How we work through it with you

  1. 1

    Introductory meeting

The first step is an unhurried talk, held in person or over video or phone, whichever suits you. We ask about your family, your goals and any estate documents you already have, then describe how we would approach your situation.

  2. 2

    Gathering the details

You share statements, policies and current beneficiary forms. We build one inventory of every asset and how it is set to transfer today.

  3. 3

    Finding the gaps

We compare that inventory against your wishes and your estate documents. Each mismatch is listed with a plain explanation and a suggested change.

  4. 4

    Making the changes

We help you complete beneficiary updates and retitling on accounts we manage and walk you through the forms for those held elsewhere. Then we confirm each change has been recorded.

  5. 5

    Ongoing reviews

We revisit the plan after major life events and at regular reviews, since a legacy plan only holds up if the details stay current.

What shapes the cost

The fee depends on how much there is to review and how involved the planning becomes. We explain how we charge during the introductory meeting, before any work begins, so nothing about the fee is unclear.

Number of accounts and policies
Ten accounts spread across several institutions take more time to audit than two held in one place.
Business ownership
Owning a business adds succession questions, buy-sell arrangements and valuation considerations to the work.
Family structure
Blended families, heirs with special needs or beneficiaries in different states call for more careful planning.
Whether we manage the assets
Legacy planning folded into ongoing wealth management is often handled differently than a standalone review.

Legacy planning questions

Something not covered here? (732) 696-7347

Do I still need a will if my beneficiary forms are up to date?

Yes. Beneficiary forms cover the accounts they are attached to, but a will handles everything else and names a guardian for minor children. We focus on the financial accounts and work with your attorney on the documents.

What credentials do your advisors hold?

Our advisors are Series 7, Series 66 and SIE licensed. Those credentials allow us to recommend and manage the investment accounts that make up much of a typical legacy plan, so the advice and the account changes can come from the same place.

Can you help if my accounts are held at several firms?

Yes. We review designations on accounts wherever they are held. For accounts we do not manage, we show you exactly which forms to update and check the results with you.

How does this connect with my retirement plan?

The two are closely linked. How you draw income in retirement changes what is left to pass on, so we often coordinate legacy work with retirement planning and tax management.

Does life insurance belong in a legacy plan?

Often it does, especially to provide cash for heirs or to equalize an inheritance. Our life insurance consulting looks at whether existing policies still fit and who should own them.

Start with the details that decide the outcome

An introductory meeting gives us time to hear what you hope to leave behind and to point out where your current setup may fall short. Clients from Manalapan, Marlboro and Freehold sit down with us in person, and many others prefer a video call or a phone conversation.
